Company Policies & Procedures
Q: Do I stay on extended benefits while in school?
A: No, we remove you from benefits while in school. Our plan only covers employees that work at least 20 hours per week. You will be added back once you return to work.
Q: Am I covered for travel insurance when travelling out of the country?
A: Yes, our benefits coverage has travel insurance for 30 days out of the country. Make sure you bring your card with you in the case of an emergency.
Q: Does my vacation automatically get paid out when I go to school?
A: No, you need to let us know when you want your vacation paid out by filling out a vacation pay request form and submitting it to your foreman before payroll cutoff.
Q: If I take vacation pay before going to school, does it affect my ability to get EI right away?
A: Yes. If you want to take vacation money to help you while in school, we recommend you ask for it to be paid BEFORE the final pay cheque, before leaving for school, otherwise you will have to wait longer for your EI and you will receive less money.
Q: How often should I take out my vacation pay?
A: We recommend you request vacation pay every time you take time off for a week or longer. We also recommend that you cash out your vacation at the end of every year so that you don't get taxed more money on a following year, or put the vacation money in an RRSP fund (you can set up an RRSP account through NEL by asking HR about it).
Q: How much vacation pay do I get?
A: If you have worked for the company for less than 5 years, you get 4% of your earnings saved to a vacation fund that shows on each of your pay stubs. If you have worked for NEL 5 + years, you accumulate 6% of gross earnings per pay cheque.
Q: How much allocated vacation time do I get per year?
A: Less than 5 years with company = 10 days/year; 5+ years with company = 15 days/year. All vacation time must be approved by your supervisor. We have a right to ask you to take it at another time if the timing does not work for the site/too many people going at once.
Q: What happens if I want more than my allocated vacation time?
A: You must request the time off with your supervisor and get it approved BEFORE you go on vacation. If your time is not approved, or if you leave for more than 4 weeks, we cannot guarantee that your job will still be around when you return. You must report all vacations longer than 2 weeks to Human Resources.
Q: How do I know if I qualify for statutory holiday pay?
A: You must work 15 of the last 30 days, and have been an employee for at least 30 days. Vacation counts as days worked only if you requested vacation pay, and you have not gone over your allocated vacation time.
Q: My extended benefits card only has my name on it. Can my dependents use it?
A: Yes. You are issued two wallet cards, both of which have your name on them. Any of your dependents that are on the plan can use the card with your name on it.
Q: When do I apply for EI when going to school?
A: You can apply on your last day at work, or 1 week before school starts, whichever date is closer to your school start date.
